Battle of the Bands Was a Hit!

Last Sunday night, the culmination of all of our efforts for the past few months resulted in one FANTASTIC show.  It was so amazing to see all of our planning and hard work collide with the enthusiasm of the Santa Barbara community, and, of course, the raw talent of every single musician on stage.  To everyone who made it out there that night: thank you — for everything! Thank you for performing. Thank you for cheering. And, most of all, thank you for supporting SBYMA and our mission to provide a fun, hands-on experience with music that unites Santa Barbara youth from all cultures and backgrounds in an environment that will ignite a desire to learn.

Although the pursuit of music has no winners and losers, prizes were awarded as a means of motivating the bands to bring their A-game. It is important to note that all bands were mentored at the event by professional stage managers like Eric Eisenberg, had the opportunity to perform for music industry professionals like Alan Bailey, JR Richards, Nick Gunn, and Darin Fietcher, were given gift bags that included swag from Horny Toad Active Wear, Fame Wizard, and Live Culture Records, and were covered by and will continue to be covered by local media.

Third place in the junior division was awarded to two bands, High Frequency and All Dudes One Chick. Each band will receive $100. Second place was awarded to The Catastrophes, who will receive $250.  And first place for the Junior Division was awarded to Technical Difficulties, who will receive $500, the opportunity to play a guaranteed paid gig on the mainstage at Fiesta 2011, and 40 custom t-shirts designed and printed by Blue Skies silkscreening.

As for the Senior Division, third place was awarded to the Windmill Vandals, who will be awarded $100. Second place went to the New Cats, who were awarded $250. The New Cats were also awarded the Rockstar Award, which is the award for the band that had the most fans in attendance (each person at the show was asked to write down which band they came to watch).  They will receive a spotlight on Santa Barbara Backbeat, which is a local TV show that “delivers a behind the scene look at people and organizations in Santa Barbara using music to make a difference in our community.” And first place in the Senior Division went to False Puppet, who will be awarded$500, the opportunity to perform on the mainstage at Fiesta 2011, and 60 custom t-shirts by Blue Skies Silkscreening.

Once again, thank you to everyone who came out to support these musicians on Sunday. We are very excited to see what the next year will bring and we sincerely hope that all of you will continue to encourage every child to focus on their own value and untapped potential through music.

For any questions, please email info@sbyma.org. Winners please call SBYMA music studios to let us know when you’ll be coming by to pick up your prizes at 805-897-4327.

To All Battle of the Bands Artists and Families

Congratulations.  What happens on Saturday, October 2nd will be the first stage of a culmination of effort by a great many people that desire to promote and support music for youth in our community.  Although SBYMA is well represented by the bands we have participating, there will be many more unaffiliated youth bands that will compete that have nothing to do with our organization.   This is truly a community event.

Here is the parent and artist planning detail for the Battle of the Bands Preliminaries this week:

  1. On Thursday evening, Sep 30, 5:30, at Live Culture, time slots for auditions will be drawn out of a hat by each band’s representative.  If a band representative is not on hand for a particular band, the draw will be made on the band’s behalf.  If a band wants to swap a time slot with another band, this is allowed and Thursday evening is the only time provided to do it.  Friday morning, the schedule must be locked in granite for the event media and public relations.  The Senior Division will generally be judged in the morning and the Junior Division generally judged in the afternoon.  However, if, for example, a mid-morning Senior Division team swaps with a late afternoon Junior Division team, this is allowable.

2.        Please note that, before today, the Junior Division was to audition in the morning, and the Senior Division was to perform in the afternoon.   The late notice change is regrettable but necessary for scheduling reasons.

  1. The Senior Division bands will be expected to show up at the Marjorie Luke at 8:00 A.M. Saturday morning for a review of the rules and a briefing of how the day will progress.  The bands can disperse if they like until ½ hour before they play, when they are expected to be backstage and getting tuned up and ready to go on.  Any band member can be backstage at any time during the day, but no teachers, mentors or family members are allowed backstage AT ALL.  If a band member needs help, there will be adult professional assistance available from 7:30 a.m. until the end of the day.
  1. The Junior Division bands will be expected to show up at the Marjorie Luke at 12:00 noon for a review of the rules and briefing.  If a band slated for the afternoon chooses to show up at the morning review, this is allowed.  See item 3.
  2. Family and fans are welcome in the audience for the whole day; there is no admission, so as soon  as you know when your band is playing, let all family and friends know so they can be there to support the kids with a live, active audience.  THIS IS IMPORTANT!  Some of the bands will not make it to the finals; this is the time to show them how much they are appreciated.
  3. At least one band representative, and preferably the whole band, is expected to be back at the Marjorie Luke at 4:30 P.M. Saturday afternoon for the judge’s announcement of finalists.

Two final notes:
This is a competition that will happen only once a year.  This is the first year.  There may be conflicts with soccer or volleyball or some other such thing.  Send your regrets to the other such thing.  There are many soccer and volleyball games in a season, but only one Battle of the Bands that will showcase your kids in front of local Santa Barbara media and industry professionals.  Not that I expect any of our musicians to be the next JR Richards… but you never know.

And finally, some of the younger, newer bands will simply not be as good as the older bands that have been together longer.  It is our belief that the less polished and less experienced musicians will see the better bands and understand that something better is within their own reach, and they will be motivated to work harder to get to the next level.  Any band that doesn’t make it to the finals this year will know what it takes to get to the finals next year.   This is a great experience for the kids, please help us to make it as good as it can be.

Judge Spotlight of the Week

This week we are featuring Nick Gunn, who, in addition to being on our judge panel for Battle of the Bands, is on SBYMA’s Board of Directors .

“Classically trained, and with a reputation as one of the world’s best selling flutists, Nicholas Gunn is in the upper echelon of contemporary instrumentalists. Having sold over two million albums, making him a double platinum artist, he is also the owner and CEO of Gemini Sun Records, based in Malibu, CA.” Here is what he has to say to the youth of Santa Barbara:

SBYMA: What motivated you to pursue a career in the music industry?

NG: I was fortunate to be able to have studied at the Royal School of Music at a very young age. This, of course, provided me with a firm base in music and it seemed natural as I got older that the only thing I was interested in pursuing was music. I began experimenting in writing and recording my own music in the late 80’s, early 90’s, and it was clear more then ever that this was my chosen path.

SBYMA:  Who were your favorite musicians when you were a teenager?

NG: Despite my classical background, my musical favorites are rooted firmly in rock legends such as Queen, ELO, Supertramp, Rush, and Journey to name a few. However, at the same time I was also extremely interested in experimental music, listening to such prolific artists as Vangelis and Jean Michel Jarre. These artists gave me a broad understanding of all music types.

3. How has your taste of music evolved during your life?

It’s obvious to say my own personal music has evolved through my experiences. However, what remains consistent is that the bands and artists I was listening to in the beginning are as equally interesting to me today. Such modern bands as Muse and Keane, reminiscent of bands like Queen, are today some of my favorites.

SBYMA: If you were on a deserted island and you could only choose one album to keep you company, what would it be?

NG: Vangelis Themes.

SBYMA: If you could give an inspiring musician a few words of wisdom, what would they be?

NG: Nobody can make you a success other than yourself. Delve deeply into your music. Buy your own gear. Record and write your own music. Become your own producer. This way, it becomes uniquely yours and therefore impossible to be taken away.

Battle of the Bands Judge Spotlight

As fall approaches and our first annual Youth Battle of the Bands looms nearer than ever, we thought it would be a good idea to introduce you to some of our judges. The local luminaries and music industry professionals that SBYMA has secured as judges for the Final Round have agreed to a Q&A session with the first place winners of both the senior and junior division of the event. To give you an idea of who these judges are and the type of advice they have to offer, we are going to do a weekly Battle of the Bands Judge Spotlight. This week’s spotlight will be on…

Mr. Alan Bailey, Treasurer of Paramount Pictures

Alan Bailey is a 35 year veteran in senior management for Paramount  Pictures. He is now an independent producer with his Dynamic Media Pictures production and distribution label. With Nicholas Gunn as President, Alan is CEO of music label and music management company Zuma Pacific Entertainment and  iRecords.

His impressive resume also boasts: CEO of Worldcast.TV, a developer of patented cost efficient digital content transmission systems to IPTV, mobile and wi-max and worldwide audiences; Professor at the Shanghai Film Art Academy, Shanghai, China; SVP and CFO of Hollywood Entertainment EDU Holding Inc., a provider of training and educational programs to Chinese film, tv and music graduates seeking further education in the US; Operating Partner, TransWorld Capital Group, a global financial and strategic advisory firm based in Pasadena, California ( with offices in Beijing and Shanghai)  offering a full array of  financial and management services worldwide; West Coast production consultant to Tax Credits, LLC ,a nationwide tax credit placement and monetization expert; and, Special financial adviser to National Lampoon, Inc.

With so much experience in the entertainment industry, Mr. Bailey will definitely be an inspiration to the musicians in the competition. Continue reading for his responses to our interview questions…

SBYMA: What motivated you to pursue a career in the music industry?

AB: Music has always been part of my life, beginning with piano lessons growing up in England when I was four years old! Now, with my movie and TV production, music is an integral part of the overall production process.

SBYMA: Who were your favorite musicians when you were a teenager?

AB: Growing up in England  as a teenager in the mid 1960’s, it was of course British bands such as The Beatles, The Hollies, The Searchers and Gerry and the Pacemakers. But I was also taken by the early American music of Bob Dylan and the classic haunting blues of Howlin’ Wolf.

SBYMA: How has your taste in music envolved during your life?

AB: It has certainly become much more eclectic as music itself has (and continues) to evolve.  I think it’s important to give every new artist a chance to express their musicality and sound, even if it sounds discordant at first. Keeping an open mind is vital rather than staying within a box with the past. Each day, new and exciting music is created and expressed, which make this art form so dynamic and thrilling.

SBYMA: If you were on a deserted island and could choose one album to keep you company, what would it be?

AB: Very tough question!! There have been so many great albums and artists!! For nostalgic reasons, and probably because he was at his prime at that time, my choice would be the Bob Dylan Live 1966 Album  of his live performance at the Royal Albert Hall in England. A really exceptional body of work.

SBYMA: If you could give an aspiring musician a few words of wisdom, what would they be?

AB: Never give up live performing. The music industry is going through a tough change right now, making it very difficult for a musician to earn a living. But, go back to the basics of performing live as much as you can and as often as you can. On a  street corner, in a small cafe, in a bar – it doesn’t matter as long as you continue to get your music out there, hone in on your delivery and music skills, and go along with the ride. If music truly is your given talent ( and not the pursuit of money from music) then perform it as much and wherever you can, and the rest will ultimately follow !!  You can’t repress raw talent and passion – you either have it or you don’t. If you have it, then pursue it with everything you can!!

A Little Gift From our Sponsors

We have exciting news to report!

We are in awe of all the support and encouragement we have received from those that are working with us to preserve musical education in the youth of Santa Barbara. Without the overwhelming support of our community and the generosity of our sponsors, SBYMA would not be able to provide youth with the opportunities that it does today.

As you know by now, SBYMA will be hosting its first annual Youth Battle of the Bands this fall. Initially, there was a $100 registration fee required from each band to cover the costs of production for the event. However, due to our AMAZING sponsors, SBYMA is now able to offer FREE REGISTRATION to the first ten bands that sign up in each division. That is right, the $100 fee will be waived for the first 10 high school bands and the first ten junior high bands that sign up.  For those that have already signed up and paid a registration fee, there are the options of either 1) being reimbursed for their payment or 2) Use their payment as  a donation to the academy.

Please visit our website to register for Battle of the Bands. Any questions or concerns may be emailed to bob@sbyma.org. If you are interested in being a sponsor, please click here to view a PDF Sponsorship form.
